Review of Integrating Sources/APA

Review of Integrating Sources/APA

The purpose of this assignment is to review integrating sources techniques: summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation. Furthermore, you will practice APA citation. These are both skills you learned in English Composition I, but will play an important role in this course. In addition to upholding academic standards, being able to effectively integrate sources allows the reader to better understand and also analyze another piece of writing. The latter can only be completed successfully after learning how to critically read.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Engage in this week’s Discussion on the topic of critical reading, as well as review this week’s readings.
  • Choose the same essay (either Carson or Porter) from your Discussion for this assignment.

Assignment Prompt: Write approximately one page of text based on the below prompts:

Part A

  • In one paragraph or less, summarize your chosen essay. It is important the summary relays the main idea (thesis) of the essay, and remains objective.
  • Next, paraphrase one line from the essay.
  • Directly quote the same line your paraphrased, using a signal phrase.

Part B

  • In one paragraph, respond to the essay’s main point. Does the author effectively support his/her thesis? Why or why not? Use examples from the text for support.
