Steven Jones recently returned from a week-long hiking trip out West. During the last leg of the journey, Stevenâs hiking boot became lodged in an old branch, and he fell. The mishap caused a tear in the meniscus of his right knee. The emergency room physician told him he would need to see an orthopedic physician to get the meniscus repaired.

Steven has high-deductible insurance. When he got home, he searched the Internet to find orthopedic physicians in his community. The first one he found was a 35-physician group with a banner reading, âYour bones knit best with us.â Searching the site, Steven found information on the partners, their research, and some educational materialsâbut little else.

The second group he found was called Macomb Orthopedic Group; it was made up of 10 physicians. The Web site contained a profile about each physician as well as price estimates for various procedures. The Web page instructed him how to register and complete the paperwork by downloading it from the site. It also explained how to submit his insurance information so they could supply a written estimate of costs for the procedure.

Write a paper to address the following:

• Describe in detail the positioning strategy for each of these physician groups.
• Based on what you see here, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each of these groups? Explain your reasoning.
• The second group also discusses a concept called âpackage pricing.â Explain how this works, and include its advantages and disadvantages.

Include any additional resources (websites, handouts, etc.) that you will share with your adult participant, if applicable.
• Evaluation (three to four slides): Describe at least one evaluation method that you would use to determine whether your intervention is effective. Outcome measurement is a crucial piece when implementing interventions.
  • Describe at least one method (weight, lab values, activity logs, etc.) you would use to evaluate whether your intervention was effective.
  • Describe the desired outcomes you would track that would show whether your intervention is working.
  • Include additional steps to be considered if your plan proved to be unsuccessful.
• Summary (one to two slides): Reiterate the main points of the presentation and conclude with what you are hoping to accomplish as a result of implementing the chosen intervention.
• References (last slide): List the references for sources that were cited in the presentation.
• Speaker notes: Share in detail how you would verbalize the content on each of the slides to the patient.

Remember, you are creating a patient teaching plan so be sure to include terms easily understood by the general population and limit your use of medical jargon. Slides should include the most important elements for them to know in short bullet-pointed phrases. You may add additional comments in the notes section to clarify information for your instructor.

Guidelines

• Application: Use Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 (or later).
• Length: The PowerPoint slide show is expected to be no more than 14 slides in length (not including the title slide and References list slide).

Throughout the course, students will engage in weekly reflection and scholarly activities. These assignments are presented in Topic 1 to allow students to plan ahead, and incorporate the deliverables into the Individual Success Plan if they so choose.

The weekly reflective journals and scholarly activities will not be submitted in LoudCloud each week; a final, culminating submission will be due in Topic 10. No submission is required until Topic 10.

Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal

Students are required to maintain weekly reflective narratives throughout the course to combine into a final, course-long reflective journal that integrates leadership and inquiry into current practice as it applies to the Professional Capstone and Practicum course. This course-long journal assignment will be due in Topic 10.

In each week’s entry, you should reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout the Professional Capstone and Practicum course. Your entry should address a variable combination of the following, dependent on the specific practice immersion clinical experiences you encountered that week:

1. New practice approaches
2. Intraprofessional collaboration
3. Health care delivery and clinical systems
4. Ethical considerations in health care
5. Population health concerns
6. The role of technology in improving health care outcomes
7. Health policy
8. Leadership and economic models
9. Health disparities

In the Topic 10 submission, each of the areas should be addressed in one or more of the weekly entries.

This reflection journal also allows students to outline what they have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses that surfaced, additional resources and abilities that could be introduced to a given situation to influence optimal outcomes, and finally, how they met competencies and course objectives.

Scholarly Activities

Throughout the RN-to-BSN program, students are required to participate in scholarly activities outside of clinical practice or professional practice. Examples of scholarly activities include attending conferences, seminars, journal club, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality meetings, interdisciplinary committees, quality improvement committees, and any other opportunities available at your site, within your community, or nationally.

You are required to post one scholarly activity while you are in the BSN program, which should be documented by the end of this course. In addition to this submission, you are required to be involved and contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives on a regular basis.

In Topic 10, you will submit a summary report of your scholarly activity. You may use the “Scholarly Activity Summary” resource to help guide this assignment.

Workflow analysis aims to determine workflow patterns that maximize the effective use of resources and minimize activities that do not add value. There are a variety of tools that can be used to analyze the workflow of processes and clarify potential avenues for eliminating waste. Flowcharts are a basic and commonly used workflow analysis method that can help highlight areas in need of streamlining.

In this Assignment, you select a common event that occurs regularly in your organization and create a flowchart representing the workflow. You analyze the process you have diagrammed and propose changes for improvement.

To prepare:

• Identify a common, simple event that frequently occurs in your organization that you would like to evaluate.
• Consider how you would design a flowchart to represent the current workflow.
• Consider what metrics you would use to determine the effectiveness of the current workflow and identify areas of waste.

To complete:

Write a 4- to 5-page paper which includes the following: APA style

• Create a simple flowchart of the activity you selected. (Review the Sample Workflow of Answering a Telephone in an Office document found in this week’s Learning Resources for an example.)
• Next, in your paper:
  • Explain the process you have diagrammed.
  • For each step or decision point in the process, identify the following:
    • Who does this step? (It can be several people.)
    • What technology is used?
    • What policies and rules are involved in determining how, when, why, or where the step is executed?
    • What information is needed for the execution of this step?
  • Describe the metric that is currently used to measure the soundness of the workflow. Is it effective?
  • Describe any areas where improvements could occur and propose changes that could bring about these improvements in the workflow.
  • Summarize why it is important to be aware of the flow of an activity.
• Remember to include a cover page, introduction, and summary for your paper
