Let’s say you want to build a square ice rink in your backyard for your children.  You have budgeted to use 800 ft3 of water, and the ice must be 0.5 ft thick. What are the dimensions of the ice rink?

The volume of the rink would be V = l*w*h. Because we know the planned volume and depth, we can substitute into the equation to give 800 = l*w*(0.5)

We also know that the rink should be square, so length and width are equal. Therefore, we can say that 800 = w*w(0.5). Simplified, the equation becomes 0.5w = 800.

Class,

How do we use radicals to solve for the dimensions of the ice rink?

What other real world uses are there for radicals?

Must be step by step!
