MAT136 Southern New Week 3 Polynomial Function Discussion

MAT136 Southern New Week 3 Polynomial Function Discussion

In this discussion, you will create your own scenario involving polynomials and think about all of the applications of polynomials, including scientific notation, area, perimeter, volume, rates of change, speeds, time, and so on. Consider a problem using one of these applications and pose it in your initial discussion post. In your follow-up posts, please provide a solution to a scenario posted by a classmate, and be sure to ask questions and offer suggestions.

For example:

In a game in the 2018 College World Series, SNHU scored two runs against Augustana University. If Augustana scored 4 more than twice as many runs as the SNHU Penmen, what was the final score? Let s represent the runs earned by the Penmen. Write a polynomial function P that represents the final score in terms of s.

In the actual game, the Penmen scored 2 runs. What was the final score?

P(s) = 2s + 4

P(2) = 2(2) + 4

P(2) = 8

PLEASE REVIEW THE RUBRIC ATTACHED. & REPLY TO THE 2 PEER DISCUSSIONS POSTED BELOW.

PEER POST #1 – Peggy Kremer

Nick eats 2 slices of pizza and Ryan eats 3 times more pizza minus one as many slices, how many slices does Ryan eat?

p(x)=3x-1

p(x)=3(2)-1

p(x)=5

5 slices

PEER POST #2 – Durval Ferreira

Maybe a bit simple but may post additional one.

My son wants to save for college now that he has a job. I told him that a year in university is $15,000. I will invest 5,000 as a gift in an fixed certificate deposit account with an interest rate of 8.00% compounded yearly. He has two years to save the difference. How much will he need to save ?

Solution:

x = Time in years

y = Amount in investment account

z = Amount needed

y = $5,000 * (1.08)x

z = 2 : y =$5,000 * (1.08)2 == $5,400

$15,000 – $5,400 = $9,600

$9,600 is need in two years
