In today’s competitive global economy, many organizations are utilizing the team concept to remain competitive and innovative. Noted in the text, “A team is in place when two or more people interact dynamically and interdependently and share a common and valued goal, objective, or mission” (Aguinis, 2013, p. 295). Most organizations today look to teamwork as the future and have made the use of teams a priority. Teams help inspire creativity and often improve productivity. Many organizations have global teams which never actually meet in person. With global markets, it is often a competitive advantage to have team members in numerous countries working on the same project. Global teams can provide different outlooks or perspectives that cannot be found in a team domiciled in the same location (Aguinis, 2013). Global competition is intense, using diverse teams provides flexibility and creativity needed to compete.

A team environment often brings out a competitive spirit that can be used to the advantage of the organization. Noted in Group Dynamics: Theory, Research, and Practice, “Findings such as these suggest that individuals’ interpretation of different aspects of their cohesive team environment was associated with personal effort levels” (Spink, Wilson, Brawley, & Odnokon, 2013, p. 150). While teams offer benefits such as increased effort levels, they often have challenges. Noted in Journal of Behavioral & Applied Management, “Teams are more productive, more creative, and better able to meet challenges of an increasingly dynamic business environment than individuals alone” (Spotts & Chelte, 2005, p. 127). Managers must encourage teams to be accountable to a common goal instead of individual objectives. The challenge of a performance management system changes with a team dynamic. Management must work to balance team and individual performance (Aguinis, 2013). While challenging, teams within organizations are what is necessary to compete in our global economy.
